We Answered:

Writing a Novel Synopsis

Many publishers require that a synopsis be sent before a full manuscript can be submitted. The synopsis must interest the editor in the story in just a few short pages. It should be printed on a good quality paper and with a standard font for a professional look. The synopsis can also be double-spaced to make it easier for an editor to read.

English-Creative writing vs. English-literature for someone looking to get into publishing?

We Answered:

I don't think it makes a lot of difference as long as you can make it clear when you apply for a job or an internship that you are interested in editing rather than creative writing. One thing people in publishing are wary of is people who don't understand that editing and proofreading are specific skills--being interested in reading and writing can be helpful, but you also need to know specifics like grammar and punctuation, proofing marks, story structure, POV (point of view), how to shorten text, and so on.

And it probably goes without saying at this point that publishing is changing very rapidly; it helps to know as much as you can about e-publishing, blogging, creating web pages, and the like. Currently it's useful to know how to edit in Word with the "track changes" feature and how to manage a database, but in five or ten years those could be obsolete technologies.
