Geraldine Said:

Worried about a student In college what should I do?

We Answered:

It's ok to be concerned about this, but don't assume all quiet people are killers like you see on the news. I've been labeled the same way for being quiet 3 years ago. Based on what I know, he has no friends, has low self esteem and is probably very socially awkward; a reason why he doesn't talk. Also saying "If you need somebody to talk to" most likely won't be a conversation starter to shy people. Again this is just my views.

Can anyone help me with my short story?

We Answered:

I think its a good idea to make the woman be having her own problems as well as trying to help the neighbours, because it gives the plot depth. Just keep going with what you have planned, because it sounds great!

P.S. I know this is really random but could you add in additional details what you have named the little boy because I know this is retarded but I have some ideas if you want to know them...I know it has nothing to do with your question but here are some names I thought of:
Saxon, Hilton, Cooper, Jai, Kye, Darcy, Luca.

How do I become a travel writer?

We Answered:

Derek:

If you have writing skills, the first step for you to take is to get your work published. Be aware that it's highly unlikely that you will immediately be able to get into a major publication, so here's a step-by-step process that you can take. (This has worked for other people that I have advised.)

Take a weekend trip to a place that's within 3-4 hours of where you live. From the moment you start, begin to formulate your "story" in your head. Make notes on the details of the trip, and look for things that will appeal to the people who will read the piece that you write.

Once you return, immediately write the first draft of your travel story. Let it sit for a day or two, then re-write it, making it as good as possible.

Make a contact with a local publication. Contact an editor of a weekly newspaper, or perhaps a monthly magazine-type publication. Offer your article for FREE. (You get much more interest at this stage of your career if you don't ask for money. That will come later.)

Keep at it until you find someone to take your article. If you don't succeed at first, look for companies in your area who have an employee publication. At this stage, you want to get your work in print.

Once you get your first piece published, repeat the process. As you do this, you will build a style and learn how to improve your work.

Eventually, you will have a body of work to show publications who just might pay you for your work. Work your way up to the larger ones as your skill increases.

Most often, this isn't a "job," but you are a free-lance writer. You eventually will get assignments from publications, who will give you a project to do, with payment agreed upon in advance.

And one of the best parts of this deal is, you get paid to travel. (Many resorts will "comp" your stay there, just to have you write about them.)

Good luck.

Is anyone out there a high school counselor?

We Answered:

Shoot for college. It's a cinch. As long as you're persistent, you should get in and finish. If they don't accept you, then you fall back on Community college, but you can still work your way up to University level after a couple of years. I have friends that went to Community college for 2 years and University for 2 years, and graduated in 4 with me. I went to the University all 4, but that isn't reflected on our degrees, they both say Bachelors Degree on them. Take the SAT and take the ACT, and hopefully you'll get lucky and do well in one of them, which can help boost you into University level. I got into the University of Arizona with a 1060 SAT score. That's pretty low.
