Creative Writing Contests
Melissa Said:
creative writing contests web sites? We Answered:
There are many writing contests on the internet. Some are on the up and up, but others just gather material and use it to their own purposes such as printing your stuff in an annual volume that costs $100 to buy, thus making you a published author and having you sign the rights over to them AND pay $100 to be published.I'd start with joining a local or area writers' club and get advice from the other members on what is good and what is a scam.
You can type the words "writing contests" in the search engine and get a lot of results to check out.

I'm looking for creative writing contests (poetry/drama/short fic)?We Answered:
On the Premises runs contests: http://www.onthepremises.com/current_con…If you're writing speculative fiction, Writers of the Future is a really good one: http://www.writersofthefuture.com/rules.… Don't be put off by the "L. Ron Hubbard" part; this is one of the most respected contests in SF/F, and I personally know several people who've launched careers after winning or placing in it. I enter every quarter and will continue to do so until I either win or am no longer eligible.

Free creative writing contest that can get my stories published? We Answered:
I have noticed that many such contests are...um, well,...fixed. Really. Some relative or acquaintance of those putting on the contest tend to win. I'm not saying _every_ contest is fixed, but...let me make a suggestion.Go to Duotrope.com. It is a collection of hundreds, or maybe thousands, of ezines that are _looking_ for stories, essays, etc. Some pay, some don't. But if you look through their lists, I bet you will find some publication(s) that specialize in what you like to write. There you have a _very_ good chance of getting your work published.
Another good site is Ralan'sWebstravaganza.
Good luck!
