Barry Said:

idea for a creative writing piece?

We Answered:

write about a memorable event in your life that was funny, sad, boring, whatever, but make it personal. Those stories win with the teachers. Your classmates might think you're too self-involved but it takes guts to do that and you learn a lot about yourself. You will also never run out of things to write about. Make sure you describe the setting with unique details. You only need a couple characters. Have them doing something, it doesn't even have to be an interesting action. Give them a conflict they have to resolve like overcoming an awkward social situation such as wanting to talk to someone who knows about comic books. You think this person knows everything about comic books then when you get to know this person, you realize you know stuff he or she doesn't know too, and you can share ideas. Keep it simple. Don't try to make the character the best at something, the most good-looking, or having no faults. the most interesting characters are the ones who can admit their faults. I have some writing on my site www.clevercatsup.com. My e-mail is there if you want me to look at your rough draft and offer suggestions.

Heard of any good writing competitions?

We Answered:

http://www.firstwriter.com/competitions/
http://www.jbwb.co.uk/writingcomps.htm

Try these two site links. They list all competitions currently running, poetry and prose, with fees and free to enter. They're all in the UK, too.

Hope this helps.

Teen writing competitions?

We Answered:

Check out Stone Soup magazine. It is a magazine that is filled ONLY with the writings and artwork of kids ages... 8 thru 13. I think it is a U.S. magazine, but kids from all over the world send their work to it.
I will send you the link to the magazine... I think that you may be able to find out about contests for your age-group on this web site, as well. Look around the site.. check out the tabs.. there is one tab where you can submit work. http://www.stonesoup.com/

Here is where it talks about your submitting your work. Since you live outside of North America, you can submit your work in an e-mail, http://www.stonesoup.com/stone-soup-cont…

I know this is not the same as a contest... but, oftentimes, when exploring publishing options, it's not uncommon to stumble upon a contest..

my daughter 8yrs has a creative writing competition where should I look out for topics to help....?

We Answered:

Go to a teacher store and look through their resources. When I was a coach for a competitive group for the gifted, I had resources that promoted this type of thinking, and we used ideas from creative and critical thinking resources that promoted creative brainstorming to help in these situations. Good luck to her!
