I'm in the same boat as you :)The best thing to do is search your local Easons or W.H. Smiths to see if they have magazines catered towards writers - they would normally have a monthy fiction competition. First Edition is particularly good, as it is solely for amateur fiction (poems/short stories/monthly serials) - check out their website.
Even if you don't win the competition, you still have the chance of being published in some of these. magazines.
