Creative Writing Career

Amanda Said:

Creative Writing Career?

We Answered:

The probability of him becoming a better writer without reading more is slim. If you don't read you only know in the general sense how things work. You need examples to make it work. Making a living as a writer takes a lot of work and networking. My suggestion would be to have him pick one specific field and start making contacts in the field. Talk to writers in the field, editors. When people start they never have qualifications but they learn, they take jobs that are nowhere near what they want to do and they get the experience people are looking for. I did journalism before I began writing novels and have resources there. I talk to agents and writers whenever I can and they've given me some invaluable advice.

Is 22 too old to start a creative writing career?

We Answered:

That's like asking if a 22 year old is too old to watch SpongeBob.

My dad is 51 and LOVES SpongeBob. xD

It's definitely not too old! Don't dare quit your job, though. A career as an author is a very iffy one. You need to be VERY good to make it. The majority of published authors don't make enough to live off of, so you need to write on the side along your main job.

I'm fourteen years old, and people are asking if that's too young to start writing. Well, of course it isn't! Just practice, practice, practice. Write, write, write. Read, read, read...!

You're never too old or too young to do anything. Just get at it!
