You could write about a tuning fork and how it struggles to stay in tune as its owner, a guitar player in a travelling band, travels around the world playing in concerts. It gets bashed around in his rucksack but it manages to hold onto its note. Then one day it gets lost, falls out of the rucksack & lies at the side of the road until it's found by ... who or what?

You may want to switch things up a little and write a series of letters in response to a schizophrenic friend (perhaps the friend is institutionalized?) without including the letters from the friend. You could then expose elements of the illness, treatment, etc. through references or 'replies' to remarks made by the schizophrenic . This set-up would also give you an opportunity to contrast the life of the schizophrenic with that of a 'normal' person and to maybe address social perceptions of the illness as they vary somewhat from the reality. It might be a tall order to properly portray the vivid interior life of a schizophrenic in the first person voice and the idea may be more effectively written as more of a 'peekaboo' into that life. There should be moments of humor, too, as this kind of piece can be too heavy if not done with a light touch at times. You should also consider making the characters siblings. Really interesting idea!
