Actually I would strongly recommend Hamilton College in upstate NY. Highly regarded for creative writing. If you are not attracted to bearing the winters of upstate NY then my next choice is Holy Cross in the Boston metro area. Emerson would be my third choice. Not nearly as competitive as Hamilton or HC but in a great location. Columbia and Cornell are too large and would not have the small teacher-student ratios optimal for the mentoring needed to inspire good writing.

Very interesting, if you like watching your ideas bcome concept and later on, reality, on paper. Socially its also good. You use your extra time after coming up with a draft you usually ask your peers to review you work and correct it grammatically and also remark on the pro's and con's and with there refrence create a better piece of literature. You will make new friends with similiar ideas, and genres. Is it worth 3 Grand? That is up to you. I believe that if you want to be an author or poet of any kind and you have a mind set on that then yes. But do not throw that much money into something like Creative writing if your "just curious" and think it will be fun, which it is but 3 grand for fun isnt worth it. So the money question is really all on your own reasons for your final perogative. Good luck, I enjoyed it but I also enjoy writing.


I took creative writng in my school and basically it was fun. Sometimes she told us to just write what we wanted and then other times she would give us some sort of topic and you had to find a creative way to infuse it in a story you write or a poem. Though my story isnt in the genre you may like but after you to take creative writing you get motivated and thats one of the reasons I began writing and I set myself a goal to finish the story above. i wish you luck if you take the class. It was a great find for me, its more about your own personal interests rather than text book nonsense you would find in many other english classes which only succeed in making you read boring and questionable material that MAY not appeal to you. Creative Writing though is all about you. GOOD LUCK!

You should apply to UC Irvine as a safety school. It is very very underrated in your fields nd it is still in the L.A. area. See for yourself
