Colleges With Creative Writing Majors

Micheal Said:

Colleges with creative writing majors/programs?

We Answered:

A Special Section of the Sept/Oct 2010 edition of Poets & Writers Magazine has a chart ranking U.S. colleges/universities offering MFAs (Masters of Fine Arts) degrees in all aspects of creative writing. If the MFA program is good, no doubt the undergraduate curriculum will be too. Here's the link:

Click on the chart image and enlarge the print to read it best.

The well-respected magazine US News and World Report also publishes an annual ranking of best colleges/universities in the US. Some of the info is available online on their web pages:

However, I don't find the list for schools with creative writing programs. Most likely, that list is in the full Best Colleges report. One must either pay for the full report to access it online. Or, most likely your local public library (or even your high school library) will hold the print edition. Just go to the library and talk with a reference librarian who can help you find it to look through.

Since many of the schools listed are state universities you will also want to investigate the tuition for those living in-state (if you live in one of the particular states) and those who are out-of-state. The private colleges/universities (like Brown Univ. & NYU) do not have differing tuitions for in-state and out-of-state students.

Also, from my own personal experience, often the private colleges/universities have a bigger "pot of money" available to grant as scholarship funds to students than do the state funded schools.

Best wishes
