Classes Creative Writing

William Said:

Did you find that CREATIVE WRITING classes helped you develop STYLE??

We Answered:

I almost majored in Creative Writing -- then one day a professor (also my advisor, also the head of the department) came into class before reading anyone's work and told us all point blank that we would NEVER make a living writing. I switched majors to English and took a concentration in CW. I found that CW classes helped me challenge myself in areas that I didn't really know about, but overall they were just about maintaining skills I already had. I firmly believe that you either are a writer or you are not. No middle ground.
The best instructor I had was a different one that ticked me off as well (we had some "discussions" about the meaning and techniques of poetry) -- he admitted at the very beginning that he could NOT teach us, but could only coach us along.

Jose Said:

Is it necessary to take creative writing classes to be a writer?

We Answered:

Not exactly. It's important to write to be a writer. A creative writing class can help, because it helps steer you in a certain direction (usually a good direction). The important aspect of creative writing is to do research, and have something to write about. This isn't as difficult as it sounds. We are all experts in some regard, and have experiences that can write about. I think it's a lot more important for a writer to read widely, write everyday, and then after you have something written, find a local writer's group or writer's workshop to share your writing.

Ramon Said:

How good are creative writing classes?

We Answered:

The value of a creative writing class is dependent on two things: the attitude of the student and the quality of the teacher.

Some writers hate creative writing classes, and argue that one cannot teach someone to write. It's a talent, and one that can be nurtured, but not taught straight out. Others swear by the value of creative writing classes and workshops.

With a good teacher and the right attitude, one of openness and a readiness to accept criticism, creative writing classes can be very good for a budding writer. Personally, I don't think they're all important, and I think a writer learns more about the craft by reading and studying the language and having freedom to experiment with prose. Sometimes creative writing classes give writers that freedom, and sometimes they don't.

But if you're in high school or something, go ahead and give it a go. Creative writing classes are typically only a semester and are good electives to have. You never know how something is going to be until you try it.

Where can I take creative writing classes in Kuala Lumpur?

We Answered:

what about CAMBRIDGE FOR KIDS.
its good too.
although its name is FOR KIDS, but its definetely not for kids.

Ramon Said:

Do you get more homework in Creative writing classes or literature classes?

We Answered:

The number of take-home assignments really depends on the nature of the class and the teacher. In creative writing, you may have to do short writing exercises before each lesson, or you may have one big piece that you bring in for workshopping once every month. In English, you may have a short paper and one thirty page essay, or lots of smaller papers and a bunch of reading comprehension quizzes. On the whole, though, expect fewer assignments on a daily basis and more long-term projects.
