Careers Creative Writing

Patricia Said:

Careers including english/creative writing or others?

We Answered:

You may like journalism, writing for magazines or newspaper, or English or creative writing teacher. You could also consider broadcast reporting, editing, or publishing. Do you like photography? You could be a wild life photographer, or photo journalist.

If you want to get a start now in the writing field look for contest for young writers and start entering. Submit writing materials to small publications that accept free lance work. If you can get just one article published, it will be a start to a writing career.

Write every chance you get and save all your writings. If it is your dream to be a writer, then you do not need to consider any other field.

(I'm not an author, but a former journalism major.)

What are some good writing careers to pursue?

We Answered:

journalism is a great start but honestly my friend a talent such as yours would be a total waste if you don't publish your work in books too.

Mabel Said:

Working for any newspaper, or magazine. Working as an editor for a book publisher.

An English-major friend of mine ended up working for World Vision in their ad department for a few years.

What Careers Can You Get With a CREATIVE WRITING Degree?

We Answered:

An actual "creative writing degree" does not exist for undergrads. Instead, you can get a degree in English with a minor or concentration in creative writing/writing. Most who have a creative writing concentration then pursues becoming an author. However, you don't need any degree to become an author or a writer. With an English degree, you can then pursue corporate jobs or other nondescript jobs requiring English majors. There aren't many specific creative writing jobs. Again, you will have a English degree so your options are expanded there. However, finding a creative writing job is limited. You can become an author if a publishing company is impressed with your work. You can also work for a publishing company to read manuscripts. You can also go on to pursue a MFA (masters in fine arts...ie a final degree for creative writers. A Ph.D is not offered for creative writing). In an MFA program, you will work intensely to sharpen your craft for writing. An MFA takes around 5 years. Most MFA writers become good enough to become published.
