Career In Creative Writing

Shirley Said:

Possible Computer Science Security or Creative Writing Career?

We Answered:

if you only minor in computer science at a vocational school, it won't be useful to you when you're looking for a job -- so of the two choices I'd say prefer the major in CS.

You can always tack on more creative writing outside of the formal degree, because nobody is going to question your educational background for creatinve writing.

You could also combine the two and study Technical Writing...

I would like to pursue a career in creative writing?

We Answered:

Don't major in Creative Writing, and avoid MFA writing programs like the plague. They've expanded from seventy-odd degree-granting programs in the mid-70s to nearly four hundred now. They've got people teaching grad-level writing who not only have never made a single commercial sale, but were themselves taught and trained by instructors with no real commercial track record.

Are you familiar with the term "FRPG"? Fantasy Role-Playing Game? This is an FRPG version of writing and publishing. They never talk about readers, or earning money by having people buy copies of their books. Their idea of success is getting a teaching job turning out more MFAs in creative writing. There are now literally tens of thousands of people who've studied creative writing at a university level. Almost none of them have been successful.

Making a career in creative writing is theoretically simple: you just have to write books that people want to buy and read. If you can do that, you can have an honest paying career.

Tammy Said:

How Do You Start A Career in Creative Writing?

We Answered:

I agree get a job where you have to write. However even if you don't - WRITE anyway. Keep a diary, a blogspot, ask your local paper for a column. Anything, but the main thing is to write.

Think about what kind of material you want to write and then map out a plan how to implement it. Do you want to be in print, or do you want to see your screen play on the silver screen? Do as much research as you can, and never take no for an answer.
