Sally Said:

Critical essay - what about this topic for the Pride and Prejudice?

We Answered:

I think what Elise is saying (and I hope I'm right here) is that for an entrance to an MFA program, your topic is way too simple. I'm going to be very honest here-Jane Austen's book is about differences in social class, so you're not doing any deep thinking at all here. Your essay just kind of points out the obvious. Sorry to be frank, but you did ask. Showing how Austen portrays the different classes isn't a critical essay. In a critical essay you have to also show how well the author does or does not do something. For example, a critical essay on social status in Jane Austen would sound more like this: "Does Austen accurately portray the difference between classes and wealth in P&P based on her usage of grammar and mannerism?" You seem to be writing just a basic expository essay that goes "How Jane Austen portrays differences between classes and wealth..." Believe it or not, there is a HUGE difference between the two. Sadly, you really can't argue any point here because Austen was a contemporary author for her time, so all her portrayals would have been accurate.

Here's a good cheat for you: look through the cliff notes and spark notes books at the library, book shelf, or online and steal an essay topic from them.

When you become a millionaire novelist, what are you going to spend your money on?

We Answered:

I'd buy children's and adult books for shelters and free clinics, and teen/children wards in hospitals and buy teen books for some half-way houses and juvenile detention centers (not just popular stuff like twilight, but other good teen books that most people don't know about because they never go to the library)
Another thing I would do is provide books for this little school I went to in a South East Asian country that is pretty small and couldn't afford a lot of books because it cost so much to buy and ship them in, and I would like to collect books for schools in similar situations
I also think it would be cool to establish some scholarships for teen's who really want to be writers that would allow them to attend conferences or workshops to hone their art (because doing a smaller scholarship would mean that it could be given to more people)

yeah, I know it sounds goody-goody, but it's true
