Maybe you could play with a character's belonging by having her return to a place she used to belong after an extended absence. e.g., girl has a group of friends in high school; the others all go to the same local college, but she goes somewhere far away; over winter break, they all meet up for coffee, and she discovers that she's lost that sense of belonging she felt with them in high school … Maybe they rebuild their connections and she gets the feeling back, or maybe she goes home from the meet-up and realizes she still feels like she belongs with her family, or maybe she decides belonging is impermanent and that she has to move on, or maybe something else. I don't know.

The BoS want to read a creative, concise and simple story.
Never start your story with, "she did not belong" etc.
Try and avoid using the word "belonging" more than once.
Think outside the square a bit.
Crap out a vocabulary - there is nothing more impressive than an eloquent 17/18-year-old.

For mine, I wrote about an elderly woman on the 7th anniversary of the death of her husband, and she was repeating all the things she used to do with him when they were together. It was cute, I admit that. It didn't really centre itself on the idea of ostracism or acceptance, but the element was there.

You could try a supernaturalist aspect, like having a man who enters a room, and is asked to choose between to briefcases. The first briefcase is empty, but if he chooses it, his life will go back to being exactly the way it was. And the second briefcase has a million dollars in it, but if he chooses it, someone will die.
He takes the second briefcase, and when he is traveling home, he gets hit by a car and dies - reflects how selfishness does not deserve to belong in society.

Make it a belonging of her father's that she grabbed from his room after he died, as a memento. Maybe a tie that reminded her of when he was all dressed up and ready for work in the morning. Or it could be something her Dad gave her as a gift when she was younger, like a stuffed animal. Or a photo she has of her father as a younger man holding her in his arms when she was a toddler.

kk attends mental institution....belonging to the routine...to the insitution itself..superficial belonging
alienation from others since she doesnt feel like she belongs there because she is different...so belongs to herself only
..could make it a soul-searching journey of self-discovery...of forming her own identity and deliberately choosing to not conform, to not belong to this institution..deliberately isolates hereself from the other patients and doctors because she believes she's different...yet doesn't belong to the outside world coz they perceive her as insane....then difficulties, effects of not belonging etc.....to belong or not to belong that is the question...whether to sacrifice your identity and beliefs to conform :)

yes, if you need to argue your case it is fairly common for a person to not really feel as if they belong until they are made to feel needed and valuable often times when a person feels needed they feel wanted. and in a situation like the one you are planning on writing it would be hard to not feel needed.
