Advanced Creative Writing

Charlotte Said:

Should I take Advanced Composition(Creative Writing) or Journalism?

We Answered:

Why not both? You don't mention your grade level, but many local community colleges offer summer courses in both subjects. You could take one now and the other over the summer break.

What is a good book (or essay) to teach some advanced principals of creative writing?

We Answered:

I agree with the person who mentioned King's On Writing. Another good one is Francine Prose's Reading like a Writer.

Professional Writing with Creative Writing Focus?

We Answered:

What do you mean by "professional writing"? Technical writing? If so, the notion of a "professional writing" degree with a "creative writing" focus is virtually an oxymoron.

Plenty of people are "professional writers" by virtue of having earned undergraduate or graduate degrees in a variety of fields and having been good enough at writing that they've gotten their non-fiction work published. (I am one of them.) Some of these people are journalists who may or may not have earned journalism degrees.

Fiction writers may or may not have earned Creative Writing degrees -- many earned other degrees first and worked in a variety of fields before getting stories or books published -- but I have to tell you that I don't know what, exactly, a "Professional Writing with Creative Writing Focus" degree might be, and how such a degree would differ in terms of establishing a writing career than those experiences I've just described to you.

The best I can do is suggest that it might help you get a technical writing job, but it wouldn't be any more useful than any other degree at helping you establish a career in creative writing, and it wouldn't give you any special advantage at all in the world of journalism -- newspaper or magazine writing. You'd be competing on the same level as any other applicant for an entry-level position.

Adam Said:

should i take an advanced creative writing class or drop it right now?

We Answered:

Usually advanced classes have a prerequisite course for you to get into the class. You don't sound ready for this big a commitment. Take a lower level class or a continuing education class where you can hone your skills & receive constructive criticism. You may want to consider joining an independent reading group (free!) that meets on a regular basis as a forum for your work.

I have an Advanced Creative Writing Assignment that I need ideas for!?

We Answered:

Cool!!! I would love to have a project as cool as that! Then again, I’m a major English/writing lover! If I were you, I'd first start by browsing photos over the internet. My favorite place to go for that is "http://www.sxc.hu/”! AFTER you've browsed through photos, then come up with a theme. Once you have a theme that you like, go back to looking for photos in that theme category. I’m sure you'll find some pictures that fall under your theme! Then, take a picture of you in some surrounding that relates to your pictures and your theme, and there you have it! Now all that's left is the writing portion!

Discuss It!
