Vanessa Said:

How do you feel when someone misinterprets your poem?

We Answered:

Wow !! Quite the question here. Ok, when someone critiques a poem of mine and totally misses the obvious or just says "I don't get it", well that is there opinion. To me a critique by anyone is strickly that person's personal opinion. Opinions are simply opinions, there is no right or wrong with opinions. That is what everyone should remember, rather than getting all upset over a critique. Now some critiques may have some thoughts you may wish to concider. To me personally, any and all critiques are welcome, there is nothing that says I have to pay any attention to them, however I find most critique quite valuable, even those who say a simple "I don't get it". Those who say "I don't get it", make me look at it again to see if maybe the poem is too difficult to follow / understand. Sometimes I find, they are correct when they say "I don't get it". Before I blindly accept a simple "I don't get it", I try to find out about the person who said it (age; schooling) that sort of thing. Sometimes they are just too young to fully understand what I have written. I certainly can not hold that against them. Sometimes I will try to help them understand if they are truely interested. I think much comes from learning and reading, the more poetry one reads and learns about the better the become at understanding what is written. I also think knowledge as in life experience can play a role in how one understands / interprets a poem. Hope this helps answer your question at least a little.

Should I, or do I need to go back to school to become a freelance writer?

We Answered:

Judging by the way you asked your question, it seems that your English is correct. I don't think you need an English course. If you're writing historical fiction, then the only thing you need to do is to read about whatever time period your novel is in.

I was never taught how to write or read English, and I have perfect grammar and spelling. How? I read, a lot. Once I got interested in writing fiction, I wrote, a lot. Practice truly helps.

The English language means the world to me, and if you really want to become a published author, I think you can. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Here are a few websites to help you with the writing side of writing novels:

For the research part, you'll have to google it. Wikipedia usually has everything you need. Then there's always borrowing library books.

Good luck with your writing,
Kayleigh

PS: I'm half your age, and if I managed to teach myself proper English through reading and writing, so can you.

Acting Resume good enough?

We Answered:

First off, no one really ever knows what will attract an agent - the right look of what they need? incredible credits? Great training? IF you are starting out (professionally), my advice would be to get more legit experience so you can eventually take the elementary schools off your resume. Regarding the portion where you list your parts - get rid of the extra, secondary, etc. I am not too sure what some of them mean but I would hope that those auditioning you know things like a Who is part of the chorus in Surgical. This is a great start, though, and there are some great resources here in SF to start you out.

What changes should I make to my Resume?

We Answered:

How good was your GPA? If it's 3.0 and above, put that on there.

You need to take off your course work, esp the English part. If it's basic course work stuff, most of it is expected by the recruiter. I would leave some of the computer since course on... and instead of saying "Computer Science courses completed:", I would say "Relevant Coursework" and then another section for "Skills" like C++, Java, Visual Basic. You need to explain more of your experience and what you did. Like your Monitor experience. What did you monitor? Do you see any crime? Save the company money? The Research position? Leader of a group of stuff? Meet deadlines? No need to include phone numbers and the supervisor. You need that stuff when filling out an application. And how are you proficient in English, Mathematics and Physics? Isn't everyone who applies to a job somewhat proficient in English? Just sounds a bit odd to me.

Change your objective to something that will help benefit the company. The economy sucks right now, everyone wants a job. But you're applying to be an asset to the company. Like "To begin a career path in software development, writing or mathematics by utilizing my professional knowledge in these areas." If they like you, then they'll give you an interview where they ask about job relocation and stuff.

Take off your Grade 3 - Grade 12 honors program. That was way too long ago, and probably no one will mention it.

Don't use one basic resume for all your job applications. If you apply for a job that doesn't need all these course work, and computer lingo, then take it off. Otherwise, they might think you're over qualified. And change your objectives to the job application. If job says "English teacher", then say "To start a career in teaching blah blah blah" and change your resume to reflect how you've helped people learn English or something.
