Beginning writers have a lot of angst about how to start, how or what to use in the story, and mostly am I doing it right. This confusion is not what a writer needs to be a script writer. A well known writer once said that to do a story (script) you must first do the story. Just enjoy the writing then fit the script to the story you wrote.

To be honest, the tool doesn't make a good technical writer. It is the ability to write well to a specific audience that is most important.

I've been a tech writer for 12 years now and when I hire someone, I don't care whatsoever what tools he/she has used. I want to see writing samples and get to know their personality to see if they are a match with the company and other writers.

However, if you want a list of tools, here are probably the top 4:

Help and Manual: Low cost and powerful. My favorite for single sourcing.
Flare: Tried it, liked it, but overkill for most.
Author-It: Very good, difficult to learn, but possible produce some very good output.
RoboHelp: Used it for years till I got fed up with it. Will never go back to it. That said, the latest version sounds much improved.

I got straight As one semester while working full-time and going to school. My strategy was to make a day to day schedule and stick to it. I stayed focused on school and left the thought of work behind once I clocked out. I did not go out much and studied whenever I had free time. However, I did take some time out of the day to relax. I was also looking up what a children's literature class is today for taking next semester. For my college it said that the class is about reading children's books and discussing them. So I'm sure you will have to think critically and like reading those kind of stories in general. I think if you love writing then take as many as you want. If you do more than one though try to balance your time and take breaks when you need them. Since you will be writing about different things (technical, etc) not all the same thing, I am sure you will enjoy them.
