Basically you can write off anything that can be considered an honest expense, to increase profit. Each expense varies. I recommend going to a tax specialist, and asking them this question.

Here are some of the things I can write off on my taxes, with my business (note: I am an IBO with a billion dollar company, and my business is not considered self employed)

Mileage
Tools (motivational cd's, books, etc.)
Seminar tickets
Food
Housing
Entertainment
And other misc items I purchased for use in my business.

For example.

If I spent 2,000 dollars on business expenses, and I made 50,000 dollars in the fiscal year, I would only be taxed on 48 thousand dollars. So, you don't get anything for free.

You would probably be surprised at what you are really capable of.
Do you think it should always be up to someone else to start a business and offer to employ you?
All businesses have been started by someone with the bloody mindedness to ' have a go '.
Many start with the old philosophy that ' If I don't try I will never know if I could '
Many big business entrepreneurs have started their business from scratch with no money or backing.
I remember meeting a millionaire who told me he started his business selling horse manure gathered from the back lanes near his home to gardeners in the town. He was very proud of his achievements and helped orphans and other good causes.
You just have to keep trying and looking for the right start.

A bookkeeper once advised me to use prepaid accounts only when you prepay several periods at once. Otherwise, if you pay monthly, a simple expense account will do.

You can change and use the office as a playroom at any time. I would rent the space to myself on a percent of square-footage basis, using the amounts paid for the house overall as my cost basis.

Before you decide on which method to use, buying or renting, do the math and see which saves you more tax money and how much, versus the hassle factor of the method.
