Depends what school and the professor teaching the class. I would talk to your advisor or even the professor teaching the class and voice your concerns to see if the curriculum for that course is going to help you write more "professionally."

Communication is HIGHLY valued in the work field. Communication includes oral and writing forms so it is definitely important to have strong writing skills. If you feel your teacher isn't impressed with your writing skill then that may be an indicator that you need to work on it more. Plus doing more writing intensive stuff doesn't hurt anyone. :)

sounds like your shooting for a liberal arts education. Take courses in literature, history, and foreign languages. All will help prep you for a college education in writing. I have a liberal arts education but i am not a professional writer by any means, however it has helped in my career and my post college education.

Try asking someone at your institution who has taken the course. Or look up the instructor and ask him or her! They won't mind. If I were teaching that course, I would expect students to understand self-reflection and the complexities of the human mind. It DOESN'T say that it is a course about exposition or writing about your opinions...

If that doesn't work for you, you can always do some online courses too.. some are free and some you may have to pay a fee for, but at least you can do them from the comfort of your own home :)
