The only field harder to break into than law right now is political science professor. There's just a glut of overeducated people with master's degrees in humanities and social sciences who want to teach. (Found this out the hard way.) You shouldn't get a JD if you don't want to be a lawyer. Law school is far too expensive and time consuming and probably won't help you achieve your goals. Also, law school is fancy trade school, and it's not going to have all the academic mushiness that you love. A lot of it is going to be very boring and not intellectually stimulating.

I don't usually say this, but going to a good* law school and becoming a lawyer might be a safer career bet than a professor, but that isn't what you want to do, so this is moot. Get the MA and good luck.
