if it's a short story why dont you read it?

Barry Said:

I'm a tennis pro and thinking of starting a business (LLC). Can I write of a portion of my apartment rent?

We Answered:

you dont say which country you are in. The rules in the UK, however, are that you can claim for all business expenses.
Normally they have a rule which says "expenses incurred wholly and exclusively on behalf of the business"
You will be able to claim, therefore, for any additional expenses you incur by working from home. These would include part of your phone bills, heating bills and of course all expenses incurred directly by the business like purchase of equipment, furniture, software etc.

For the use of cars in uk you can charge a mileage rate for all business miles of 40p per mile for the 1st 10,000 miles plus 25p per mile for all additional miles.

As far as the rent goes, you would probably be able to claim that only if the part of your flat could be used for nothing else but your business - which is unlikely.

Courtney Said:

As a sole proprietor, can I deposit checks written to my business name to my personal checking account?

We Answered:

No. You must register with the county and get a DBA or doing business as NAME and you have to file IRS Form SS-4 and get an EIN instead of using your SSN. Then go to the bank an open account with the DBA and your new EIN and there is the account for your business that you may deposit checks written in your business name into. You will be the signatory on the business account. You will be able to make deposits and sign checks to withdraw money at will.
