Vicki Said:

How can I fail my business law exam, when they are people in my class that don't even speak english?

We Answered:

It's really common that a foreigner's written English is a lot stronger than their spoken English. So it really is possible that even if they don't speak perfectly, they write well enough to pass this exam. They've been taking academic, written English classes for decades - it's their spoken language that isn't as strong.

A lot of legal English is based in Latin. If the foreign students studied Latin, or any Latin language - French, Spanish, Italian, etc. - then they are able to use that knowledge to help them understand these terms. So even if their spoken English is a bit rough, between their knowledge of a Latin-based language and their knowledge of academic written English, they might do quite well on a written exam.

It's also quite possible that these students studied their arses off, because they are in the country as foreign students, and paying huge fees - often, their parents' entire incomes - to have this opportunity. They work their butts off to succeed. They're also likely the best and brightest student from their village - to even have been given the opportunity to study overseas is a big deal, and often only the best students can come. So they're likely extremely bright, and very hard working.

It's also quite likely that they had a full understanding of the concepts the teacher tested them on, and were able to explain that well enough so that the teacher understood. If you were missing the concepts, it doesn't matter how good your English was - if you missed the concepts, you missed the concepts, and you failed the exam.

I'm glad you've switched teachers. If you're struggling with the terminology, work closely with your new teacher, and also get outside tutoring if you need to, until you get caught up.

Arlene Said:

Business Major + Creative writing minor = book publishing job???

We Answered:

It depends exactly what you want to do in book publishing. Assuming you just want to work on the financial side, a business major alone should be sufficient. If you're looking to do marketing or something where it would help you to have a little more familiarity with the product, a few English courses could only help you (most creative writing programs do require that you have some familiarity with literary analysis, so you're not really going to be able to avoid them that way). At the very least, make sure you pursue internship opportunities in the field, do plenty of reading on your own time of a wide variety of books, and brush up on your proofreading so you can avoid misspellings of "industry."

This sounds better to me, it seemed like a run-on sentence, so it needed to be broken up but, you did pretty well though
