What are the themes in this short story?

We Answered:

it seems there are some questions about familial obligation. Why would Pat feel obligated to stay and help his brother, but both sons don't feel obligated to obey their father? Does this have something to do with the time period? What was family life like in the 1970s? How does rebellion play in here?
I remember in high school English talking a lot about the "journey from innocence to experience." Does Pat start out innocent about the difficult realities of real life, maybe? Is there any indication that he idolized or admired his older brother, only to find out that he wasn't as perfect as he thought?
Hope that helps.

How would you react to this cover letter? (Long)?

We Answered:

I stopped at "I got a hell of a kick reading... ".

I wouldn't want someone who talks like that working for me.

What is the theme in this short story?

Seems to be about growing up, what makes a family, making your own choices (as Clifford has done and Pat now wants to do), breaking the apron-strings and heading out on your own, links between brothers and how strong they can be, pride (Clifford is broke but still wants to 'treat' his brother), wanting to make a difference in someone's life (ie Pat wants to be where he can make a difference), what makes a man a man (is it dad or is it Clifford), and finally about how your choices affect others (ie what impact will Pat's choice have on Jeannie?). Good luck!
