Instead of being afraid of how you will look when you're old, you should be afraid that you are not doing the things you should do during your youth.
Are you getting an education? Are you doing something to help others?
Instead of thinking a man can make your life good, you and your mother both should know that before any man of quality would want you, he wants to know if you have made your life good by your self. A man of quality doesn't want a woman who needs to be rescued. He wants a strong woman who has good priorities and deals with her life as it is, the best that she can.
By priorities I mean, are you healthy? To the best of your ability.
Do you have a job skill, an education so that you can support yourself?
Do you treat your parents with respect while living your own life and making your own decisions?
If you're an adult, are you capable of supporting them if they need it, or do they support you?
Are you of good character? Honest, kind, but having a back bone, not letting anyone use you.

No, you can send it, but a solicitor's letter will have more credibility, both to your former partner and to a Court.

If you choose to send it yourself, fill out an affidavit of Service ( look in the 'Rules of Civil Procedure" for your state/province for a sample), and have your signature witnessed by a notary public ( there are usually some in the court office).

Keep in mind that, if you sue, a win is not guaranteed and even if you win, it may be difficult to collect.

I wouldn't count on a quick apology and settlement. these things often become fights to the death.

I don't suppose you talked to an attorney before you signed this lease...? If not, now is a good time. Even an hour of a good business attorney's time could save you a lot of headache. You can find out what your options are. A commercial lease is a binding contract, and you need expert advice.

If you think you don't want to spend the money, ask yourself what massive aggravation (beyond what you are currently experiencing) will do to your productivity and effectiveness. Or what your peace of mind is worth.

I tell my entrepreneurship students, "the only thing more expensive than talking to a lawyer is NOT talking to a lawyer."
