Potty training is a process for most kids. We didn't have "elimination communication" when my kids were doing it; it was just the beginning stage of the same process. I guess how you classify it would affect how long you decide that potty training takes, but other than that, why would it matter what it's called? I would say if he can understand and go on the potty, that's pretty well into potty training. He may not initiate it for a while yet, but if you can remember to encourage him to go on the potty regularly, he'll get the idea soon enough.

My guess is that kids who start younger may take longer - for the very reasons you mentioned - verbal communication, cognitive understanding, and ability to manage clothing. My son didn't really get trained till two and a half; but I distinctly remember the day he decided he was done with diapers. He never needed them again. My daughters both started around 18 months, but it was probably a couple of months before they stopped needing diapers. It was more our decision - we simply stopped using them and accepted the consequences. Once we did that. they got the hang of it pretty quickly.

I would say just take your cues from your son. Let him do it at his pace, and reward every "successful" attempt. at least with praise. One day you will just know it's time to stop buying the diapers.
